Patent Registration in South Africa

With millions and millions of patents already in the ever shrinking global village it really gets more difficult to be first in line; inventive and novel. It requires tremendous insight in certain fields and or certainly a train wacked or Boeing slapped idea. Some people get the biggest ideas ever on a hangover or in between changing a flat tyre on a busy and dangerous highway. Some patent attorneys and agents claim three people came with the same idea in a fortnight. Sometime it’s just in the air or “Ubuntu” like we call it in South Africa.

However new patents in South Africa don’t seem to slow down at all and in the USA alone a total of more than 110 000 patents were granted in 2015.

The “simplest patents make the most money, quickly”.

Is this true? Yes it is from one viewpoint. A simple but novel patent requires less money to get to market or to sell. So on an average this is definitely true. It’s also true in the view that complicated patents may get loss in a sea of confusion or can’t be understood by anyone but the inventor/s and the trained patent expert. However bear in mind that complicated patents such as software engineering and architectural design software patents can be most valuable provided you have a big wallet to enforce them. If you don’t have proper financial backing you won’t see your patent come to fruition, ever.

Summary: stick to the lightweights (patents) and leave the heavies for the heavies.  If you’re a serial inventor: work yourself up through experience from simple to complicated patents... unless you’ve invented a quantum leap machine... J

7. Electronic wind measurement device

The present invention relates to a wind measurement device (Figure 1) or type of Anemometer. The device is constructed to be more compact, rigid and robust than said anemometers presenting spinning cups and a moving wind vain. Load cells 22,24 are used to measure wind speed through a Y 75 and X 75 axis captured by a sphere 110 (ball) that’s mounted on the upper load cell. The base and outer cover 28 is mounted to the inner lower load cell. Wind forces pressing against the sphere can be accurately measured to wind velocity. Due to the symmetric roundness and geometry of the exposed sphere, a consistent wind reading can be achieved regardless of the prevailing wind angle.
